Oral Examination

Detailed oral and dental examination with treatment planning.

What is an Oral Examination?

An oral examination is a diagnostic process where the dentist systematically and comprehensively examines all intraoral structures — teeth, gums, tongue, palate, cheek mucosa, jaw joints, and soft tissues. Early diagnosis is the most valuable tool in dentistry: small problems are caught before they grow and resolved with simple treatments. At Dentaline Dental Clinic, we provide detailed examination and personalized treatment plans for each patient.

What is Examined During the Appointment?

  • Teeth: Each tooth is individually examined for cavities, cracks, wear, erosion, and discoloration. Existing fillings and crowns are checked.
  • Gums: Color, shape, bleeding status, pocket depth, and recession are evaluated. Periodontal probing measures gum pocket depths.
  • Tongue and Mucosa: The tongue, inner cheek surfaces, palate, and floor of the mouth are screened for lesions, color changes, or abnormal formations.
  • Jaw Joint (TMJ): Mouth opening-closing movements, joint sounds (clicking), pain, and muscle tension are assessed.
  • Occlusion: The bite relationship between upper and lower teeth is examined, identifying premature contacts and bite disorders.
  • Lymph Nodes: Head and neck lymph nodes are checked by palpation.

Why is a Dental Examination Important?

Many oral diseases show no symptoms in early stages. Cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and jaw joint disorders can progress silently. Regular examinations detect these problems early, enabling simple, economical treatment. Delayed diagnosis leads to more complex, lengthy, and complex procedures.

Immediate examination is especially recommended in the following situations:

  • Tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Gum bleeding or swelling
  • Mouth sores or lesions lasting more than 2 weeks
  • Jaw pain or difficulty opening the mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth

Examination Process

1. Medical History: The patient's general health, medications, allergies, and dental history are reviewed.

2. Clinical Examination: Systematic intraoral inspection using mirror, explorer, and periodontal probe. Every tooth, gum area, and soft tissue is evaluated.

3. Radiographic Assessment: When indicated, digital panoramic or periapical X-rays provide supporting radiographic data.

4. Diagnosis and Plan: All findings are synthesized for diagnosis. A personalized treatment plan with priorities is created and presented to the patient.
